Neighbourhood alert northants police. Northamptonshire Police Rural Crime Team are reminding the owners of vehicle manufacture with keyless entry and ignition systems, to ensure that the car key fob is kept somewhere safe when at home or work. Please keep them away from window sills and leaving in the back of any door lock. Ideally if you can, in a safe secure faraday pouch to prevent devices being used to scan remotely for your Vehicle keys. We are seeing a rise in the theft of ANY class of Motor Vehicle using this method, not just high performance vehicles as previously seen.

Please report any suspicious activity to us. If happening at the time..... 999 anything else call 101 or report online.

Further helpful crime prevention advice can be found on our Force Website. www.northants.police.uk and using the search

I have exactly the same, but currently on one of them, even with the key safely enclosed in the pouch, I can still easily open the car and drive it away??? I would regularly check that your pouch is still working as I think they deteriorate over time,
good call to keep on top of them, but why would they start to fail, a broken seal on the pouch I guess. How about a lead tin.

I too had exactly the same pouches (mine came with a box as well) but I stopped using them when I brushed last my door handle (with the key in the pouch) and the car unlocked. This prompted me to test the pouch (which was only 1 month old) and it failed. Had I not discovered this by accident, I would have been none the wiser.

Since then, I have been using a different brand, which is ok, but I now ensure the key is in the pouch and the pouch is inside the box when I’m at home.

Bit of a faff, but tinfoil also blocks the signal.

If you double-click the lock button on your key fob it should deactivate the keyless-entry function until you use the key again. This works for both my 21-plate CLA and my wife’s 16-plate A-Class.

As an extra layer of protection our keys sleep in a faraday box rather than a pouch. i have found the box much more effective, testing it by putting the active key in the closed box and trying to open the door with the box just a couple of inches from the car - the keyless entry is blocked.

Double pushing the button doesn't work on these!

Fortunately they have extremely limited effective range and are easy to disable.

A foil lined tin with a tin lid or a microwave oven will also work if you don't have a faraday pouch!

Thanks for the heads up LK... don’t feel so alone in my OCD retraining of all the family and visitors to put their keys away in a drawer No where near the hallway...

Wearing a tin foil hat I read somewhere that not only would your keys be protected if stuffed up your bum, it was also recommended by some to be an effective method of protection against covid! Who would have thought? :geek:
Guess you would only know if it worked by sticking the keys in your mouth and seeing if the taste was right!

Keyless entry on the i30 is only slightly less annoying than the stop start tech, plus I never know what to do with the ****** key fob !! I much prefer putting a key in an ignition barrel.

Agreed, if manufacturers would only make a simple slot that you could fit your key into…

I never know what to do with the ****** key fob !!
Mine lives happily in my pocket and never comes out again for the duration of my journey.
Problems with this arise when people have a whole bunch of keys on the same ring as their car key which makes it potentially uncomfortable to keep in ones pocket while driving.
I have always kept my car key on its own and separate from all other keys.
To my mind if you take your keyless fob out of your pocket then you have immediately negated the main benefit of the keyless system.

I take this stance with non keyless , a bunch of keys swinging about only serves to cause wear to the ignition key barrel .
