Hello, problem.

When I turn my car on (203), I get approx 10 loud clunking noises from under the dash/radio area. Its kind of two clunks, click/clunk.. that sort of thing. Its just started in the last week.

I have noticed that when I go to put hot air on (dials on full heat), I get warm air out the windscreen, but cold air on my feet and its really cold around the ashtray and centre console area.

Would you say the two issues are probably combined?
Thanks for any help with this.

Sorry to bump this, but would anyone know why under the dash it would clunk for approx 10 times after starting vehicle? Then it goes away. The only thing I have noticed is that the air does not squirt down on the feet area when I choose that setting from the aircon unit.

Perhaps its a stuck flap or something in the aircon which deflects to the feet area?

Thanks for any ideas, airbag.

As a vague guess i would say that some part of the flap linkage has come adrift or possibly one of the stepper motors faulty. It's going to need a dash strip-down to locate the fault.

It's either the air con motors or something called joint pieces in the air con. My 2001 c320 estate has been in 8 times over the last 2 years trying to fix this problem the first time it went in it cost me £900 second time £250 after that it has all been either warranty or goodwill work. The garage is fixing it as I write this they've had the car for 4 days and are putting 4 new air con motors.

<ugg>... welcome to the world of MB al....
Geez thats some cost.. is that due to parts or labour to get at it?

Be interesting to know if any other 2001 C Class (or around that time) had similar ongoing aircon issues like you have had.

Thanks for the heads up on price etc.

cost was for labour and parts the £900 was because they had to take the dash apart 8hr job the cheaper one they could reach the part through the radio/command opening.

Smart + others :)
All the flaps are operated by stepper motors and connected with PLASTIC gears, which wear and jump. Most of the time, the dash needs to be removed to access them. Parts are very cheap but it the labour thats the killer.
