Also whilst i am here. I have tried to see how the dash comes apart. I tired and failed although someone mentioned that you need to take it off starting with some screws located under or near the gear shift lever. Does this ring any bells?
On the w124 there are two screws at the bottom of the panel. take these off and pull off the two knobs (fan speed and direction) then the panel should become free.
