Hi Guys

Below are images of the Heater fan in my 1997 E230 estate, which has air con and climate control.

I have had the unit tested and it is the rear stat unit (aka resistor pack, apparently) which has failed - the fan itself will work.

Any idea if Mercedes still make these????? It has no part number on it that I can see (??)

I found a second hand fan to match this one with Mercman breaker - but they'd taken the rear stat off of it - thus making it useless for me :x

I'm knocking my head against the wall trying to get this fixed.

Any help much appreciated!!!

I'd try contacting Siemens directly and quoting the part number on it.

Is it openable or is it a sealed unit?

Openable

I believe the unit can be opened, but it is sealed in 'amber' - that is to say that it's covered in something that kind of looks like amber - meaning you cannot access the components.

I contacted Mercedes, and they said:

The resistor pack has been superseded and now requires four items to replace it including the heater motor-

A2108211651 £194.77
A2108201017 £18.38
A2108206742 £314.67
A2108352840 £41.19
Total price £569.01 including vat.

:( :( :( :( :( :(

Looks like I need to keep checking the breakers yards

10 years

And I thought Mercedes were supposed to guarantee to make replacements parts for at least 10 years.

I guess you could argue that they are 'replacement parts' - four of them and ****** expensive

If it is repairable I can do it for you.

Hi
Open it up and replace the faulty resistor or two.

They are not 'resistor packs' as such anymore, they are continuously variable as opposed to 0-1-2-3 speeds. They are basically just a big transistor in series with the motor, and can burn out as they carry a lot of current (hence the huge heatsink).

If it can be opened it would be easy enough to replace it - cost of transistor? £3 tops!

Malcolm has already stepped into the breech before I had a chance! :)

Hi Guys

Malcolm: would be great if you could! What woul dbe the damage for the repair work?

Hibbo - Ah yes, I see. So it is a variable control rather than the three step for three fan speed jobs. I'd love to get you or Malcolm to repair it! That would be great!

BlackC55: Are you 100% sure on that? The reply I got (above) was actually from Mercedes. DO you have a part number?

Let me know guys!

If it is not potted and I can get to the output device, the cost is near zero.

potted?

Not sure what potted means :-?

The fan is out of the car so I could mail it to you, or remove the resistor pack (I assume it's removable) and mail that.

Let me know

Potted means encased in resin so that you cant see inside.

I do not want the whole thing, just the little pack.

potted

ah - I see.

I beleive it is in resin - at least the guy who did a service for me (very good by the way!) told me they usually are. Are they easy to open up once they're removed from the fan case? If so I'll take a look later on.

Sometimes i can get the resin out, it will cost you nothing for me to try.

Are you all absolutley sure you can't get the resistor. I changed the one in my 2000 W210 a couple of years ago. It was called the 'fan regulator' and cost me £125 from the dealer. Just walked in and bought one. I'd be surprised if they'd changed much over the years - it certainly looks pretty similar.
