Hello to the troops.
Been a while since I posted a thread, the Baby's been running very well of late. Problem now though with the Heater Fan.

Goes like this; Start Car, switch on fan to any speed, fan runs for about 5 secs. and stops, and then theres a little sort of grinding noise for a few more secs and then nothing.
Switch fan speed to zero, wait a minute. switch fan speed back up and exactly the same thing happens.

Supply to the Regulator is good at 12v and the signal output ranges 2v to 8v from min to max fan speed setting.

Connecting 12v directly to the fan changes nothing so my guess is fan bearings or bushes.

Has anybody out there had something similar and more importantly is the fan a serviceable unit?

All advise and words of wisdom are appreciated

Thanks in advance,

Ok guys, heres the update.

The fan assy is on my kitchen table right now.
Looks as though the bushes are down to the last but my problem is that they are on a couple of little spring loaded carriers and I cant see how I can get to them, let alone change them without removing the large black plastic impellor.

Does any one know how this Impellor is removef from the motor?

Thanks
Ger

Has the forum become a much quieter place recently or are all the guys with the answers gone away for the long weekend??

For what its worth to the silent majority out there, tapped the shaft out of the impellor, got in at the bushes which are defin itely down to the springs.

Couple of bushes on Tuesday and we'll be blowing again,

Not too tough a job and the satisfaction rating is ballistic.

Happy E300TD again.

That's a good post, most Merc dealers would simply replace the fan at huge expense....

Hi Olaf, not as good as one might think.

The Mercedes solution was to replace the motor assembly complete at ?240.00
The chosen solution was to buy a couple of Washing Machine motor brushes, re-fashion them to the rewuired shape & size and fit them. She's happily blowing away, total cost ?4.70.

trouble is though as with any electrical item if the brushes were that worn and the noise they would have been arcing, which means damage to the commutator.!!!
see how long the motor lasts?
Thats why a dealer would replace the whole assembly

You could be right but thirty minutes and a fiver beats thirty minutes & 240.00 in my book. The commutator looked all of its 105,000 miles of motion but I cleaned it up while I was in there & as I say, she's a blowin!

Tell you what, I'll let you know if she sits down in the next 18 months.
