I've been quoted £700 tp replace the heater matrix in my 1993 190 automatic, apparantly the dash board has to come out. I don't have that type of money so is it something I could do myself? If so can anyone tell me where to get information as the Haynes manual isn't much use.

Oh dear! 700 sounds way over the odds though, did that price come from a
merc/main dealer? I got mine replaced by a country garage for 400 euro.

Do you mean heater matrix or heater control unit. i.e. fan settings/thumb wheels etc.
I bought a comprehensive Mercedes workshop CD on Ebay [very cheap] and removed my heater control panel in approx. 15 mins [C220 Auto petrol]. It had failed and was on it's default setting of 'Full hot'. A quick search on the internet found me a replacement second hand unit for £61 [delivered next day] from a breakers yard. I fitted it and all was fine for a few weeks. This too went on the blink as per the original. As this had happened to two units, I realised that the problem was elsewhere. I stripped the unit out again, WD40'd everything possible and did the same under the bonnet, i.e. fuses, duo valve connector etc etc. Touch wood, everything appears fine up to press.

This is interesting. I also appear to have a problem with the heater control unit.
The blower speed rotary switch got to feeling notchy and now it doesn't want to change speed.
Been trying to work out how to get it out to have a look. I'm going to buy a club hammer tomorrow.
