Heating blowing cold in 220TE

Hi there,

First time poster here. I've a 1992 220TE 155k miles.

The heater's not working. Everything seems fine, fan ok, blows in right places but it's blowing cold, apart from initial heat from engine.

I thought the first place to check would be the fusebox although according to my manual the heating fuse is in the 'Auxiliary Fusebox' which for the life of me I can't find. Manual says "in main fuse box" which it's not - so I must be looking in the wrong place. I know and have opened the main fuse box (with 1-16 and then A-H) but where is Aux fuse box? Anyone help?

If the fuse is ok then I'm assuming that the heat must be generated by somekind of element. If so this may be dead. If so could anyone suggest how difficult a job it is to replace this?

Many thanks,

Your heater is powered by heat from the engine.

The engine is cooled by water, and that water is routed through the heater when you turn it on.

As a first step, check the water level in the expansion bottle under the bonnet.

A non-functioning heater should be investigated by someone who knows what they are doing - as I said the water cools the engine, and if there's a problem the engine could overheat and be damaged.

I would get it checked out ASAP.

It's probably the Duovalve. Common point of failure. Expensive to buy from a dealer, cheap secondhand

Don't get a normal local garage to fix it - you'll need someone who knows W124s to diagnose it properly & fix it

Do you know of a local Mercedes independent garage?
