what car have you come from? I had a rental Vectra last week and the steering was VERY light which made the steering in my Merc feel heavy. In truth the steering on the Merc is much better weighted it just feels heavy compared to the Vectra

Do you get any noise when holding the steering on full lock

What width are the tyres? if they are from the wider end of the range this can make for heavier steering especially if the previous owner has opted for some superwide aftermarket option.

The steering is a bit heavier than previous E's. I imagine it was to give it better feel and stability at higher speeds. Previous models were often accused of being vague. The 320s have speed related power assistance which is great but you and I have to put up with the the normal one. I have 245 tyres as well which doesn't help but you get used to it. If I drive other more assisted cars it feels heavy but drive something heavier for a bit and it feels lighter. It's all relative and you can still drive or park with one finger so it can't be that bad.

Just been out in an E320cdi with speed sensitive steering - a vast improvement on the standard system. Really light at parking speeds but equally stable as motorway speeds. Sadly its not really appropriate for an after thought as it requires the rack to be replaced.

Power steering noise on full lock

Just looking at this thread and I note that Malcom asked if there is a noise on full lock. I have an ongoing problem with stiff steering on my e class and a noise on full lock - could this be the cause of my stiff steering please?

Hi,
I think Malc's comment was if there was,nt a noise on lock then the power steering was,nt working correctly as there should be a noise on full lock, though this can get noisier if the power steering fluid is low.

Thanks Andy,, I have been trying to think why I asked this, and I cannot remember if this was something special in WIS on the variable steering, when I turn on I will take another look, I believe that it does need someone good on STAR to sort it out
