Hi

My name is Hywel and live in Tewkwsbury, Gloucestershire. I own a white 64 plate SLK 250 CDI. I bought it in 2016 with 18k on the clock and it now has 57K.

I've only just found this forum based in the UK, a bit slow I know.

Current issues I have are:

Clunking roof, tried Gummy Pfledge the rubbers, greased all the joints in the roof mechanism and still it clunks.

Intermittent alarm, checked the battery when rested and the stored charge was low. It was the original battery so got it changed. Issue still remains.

Welcome to the forum.

The alarm issue may be a corroded battery inside the siren affecting the PCB. A quick Star test at a Mercedes specialist would confirm.
Only fix is a new siren from the dealers for around £110.
Its an easy DIY once you have located the siren. Usually in behind the drivers side wheel arch liner but some models are in different a place.

Hello and welcome. Clunking roof may just be requiring adjustment as they can work loose.

Hi Hywel What do you mean by clunking.
Hi Bay Leaf,

Going over little ruts, holes in the road causes a clunk from the back of the car. It also happens when the car causes the roof to flex a bit, eg when turning out of our driveway over the pavement and lowered pavement.

One area I want to explore is the boot lid. When I push down on the rear of the bootlid when closed, and roof up, there is downward movement of about 1cm. Would you know if this is normal or should it be solid, no movement?

Cheers

Hywel

Does it do it when the roof is down, if it does then it's probably not the roof. I've got an SL which is very similar to your SLK and there is no downward movement with my boot lid. You will be able to adjust it by moving the keeper ( that's the thing the boot mechanism grabs hold of ) down a bit so that will be trail and error. If any of that doesn't work it might be something to do with the rear suspension or maybe the exhaust.

Please be aware that I'm no expert by any means on the subject or even the car I'm just following logic. I'm sure someone else will be along with more experience than me to help you, but it will give you something to try in the meantime.

Sounds like suspension to me, have it checked on a lift.

Welcome by the way.

Hi, I've adjusted the bootlid as you said. A couple of torx screws loosend to move the lock receiver down a little, at a time, tighten up and bootlid now has no downward movement. This has solved the clunking I was hearing from the back. I reckon the bootlid lock was jumping a bit on the receiver going over little ruts. AND, the alarm hasn't gone off unintentionally since! So, I'm assuming it was affecting the bootlid sensor, I"m assuming there is one that is! Thanks, Hywel
