hello all, approx a year ago i used to use this site for my e class and found excellent. sold that, bought a rangerover vogue, fired it back out again after 6 months because, well the usual! anyway, couldnt resist, now have an w140 s320l. always loved this shape and had to get one.

so, first weird problem, im pretty sure my box isnt going in to 5th. at 80mph shes on 3700 rpm, seems a little high? searched but cant find much, please can anyone help, ive had new filters and oil in box and engine, new air flow meter from stealer, which by the way are givin you £350 back for your old one so they can destroy them!???, leaving £250 to pay which i thought was fair, so i cant see what else it may be. every other gear works fine. but also my s and e button has no diffrence on anything either, nothing lights up and doesnt make the slightest diffrence. though it may be in sports mode but changes early and no light.

all help greatly appriciated! thanks

The S/E button only changes the point the gears change, it won't affect the revs at a given speed in a given gear.

3,700rpm/80mph sounds about right for a big engine.

The S E function on a 140 is to do with the gear it starts in, in Economy it starts in 2nd, in S it starts in 1st, your car should drop into 5th at 62 MPH on light throtle, from memory, I think its doing 3200 at 70

ok thanks for quick replies, right ive tried the d to 4 bit and it doesnt make any diffrence so it has to be stuck in 4 i rekon?

and il try the pull away theory on the e/s. it does pull away in 2nd normally yes, but i thought there would of been a light on the dash maybe and also i thought it should change at higher revs in s.

ps..... re my new air flow sensor. i had a terrible hesitation and hunting revs if i just touched the throttle, had a look at air flow meter and was pretty crap so bit the bullet and bought a new one. worked alot better. but the under lying problem was still there? earlier this evening it got really bad and annoying so i pulled over and opened the bonnet. on the air intake pipe that runs from the grill to the air filter housing there a little probe that sits in the pipe with two wires coming of it and running somewhere, anyway i unplugged the probe and the problem has stopped!?

any one tel me please, WHAT it is, and WHY its fixed the prob? baffled! thanks!

The probe could be the air temperture sensor. Re the box,there is no lamp for the sport/economy setting, If you are driving in the economy mode you can kick it into first and override the switch.

My M103 2.6 litre engine does 100mph at 4000 revs, 60mph at 2500 revs and 120mph at 5000 revs and is only a four speed box.
