C180 Kompressor, 2005, 1.8l,
I will be grateful if some could help me with my problem. On December last year I bought a C180 Kompressor (73K millage, petrol). First week it was OK. One second week I got engine sign on. I contacted with seller and he told me some time cheap fuels (I went for holidays and had petrol from countryside pumps) can cause the problem (as there was no driving issues). After that I finish my petrol and top up with Shell regular petrol and the sign went off. Since then I am having premium petrol thinking the car is not compatible with new E5 petrol. But recently, the sign again keep coming on and off (I am still using premium petrol). As I said there is no driving issues but it is very annoying and disturbing driving with an engine sign on. Please advise guys....

Hello and welcome,

Sounds like the seller is feeding you a line - fuel is regulated and E5 or E10 are both fine with your car - get the codes read and see what they say

Hi and welcome. You need to get the codes read to see what the car thinks is wrong.

Welcome. Whereabouts are you ? If you are in the UK, there is no difference between countryside and city fuels. It all comes from the same refinery.

As above, find a Mercedes specialist (not a main dealer) who can read any logged fault codes and determine the problem.
If you give us your location, someone may be able to recommend a specialist.

hello everyone, just an update...

I did checked with code but...so far I remember it was something 'lean mixture...'

the eml has a pattern...for example....sometime it is off...but if i stay in a traffic for 2/3 minutes its comes back again. if i don't get any traffic, after 3 starts (on 4th start) the light goes off.

there is no other driving or power issue.

one garage told me there could be some vacuum leak. he needs to check on trail and error basis. the first one is crankcase breather hose and he gave me quotation of (£130 for new parts + labour, which is absurd). the part is only £10. I am still driving with the issue. considering London traffic...yes mu eml is one almost 80% time :-(

I just need to ensure the specific problem so that i can avoid unnecessary spending

The garage could well be right about the EML being caused by a vacuum leak but my advice would be to contact your local MB Independent they know these engines inside out have the codes read and be prepared to pay for some labour in having the fault diagnosed. Vacuum leaks can be caused by something as simple as a rubber hose failing and with that age of car very possible

Thanks Malcolm for your reply. Do you know any independent garage close to SE1 (London)?

If Alex Foti is too far, there is a very good Mercedes specialist in Harrow NW London.
