Hi, I've just signed up and wanted to introduce myself. Currently driving a Merc ML270 with no problems, and an SEC 560 which was my main reason for registering! I could do with a bit of extra advice.

The 560 is great but a couple of things worry me.

1. The car seems to emit an excess amount of exaust. It is the right colour and smell (if that makes sense!), there's just lots of it. Any ideas?

2. There is quite a lot of play in the steering wheel, although I am yet to check bushes and track rod ends; I'll report back on this later.

Anyway, hello to all.

Regards,

Joe

Hello to you young man as well :p with point 1, if the head gasket was leaky it would emit white smoke until very hot, is the any water on the dip stick or in the oil filler cap.

With 2 there is play with the engine off and the wheels are checked in the straight ahead posistion

Welcome on board Joe.
I'd suspect the SEC has the old Merc steering box. They do give a lot of play but can be adjusted from the top nut to take up the slack.
As for 'lots of exhaust', assuming it's running right and not using an excess of vital fluids, chances are it's just steam from inside the exhaust system. Moisture builds up, especially if you don't run it daily.
A good run and it should settle down.

Hi Joe
If there is a doghnut coupling on the steering column, check that it is not torn.
Adjusting the nut on top of the steering box always used to work on my car.
