I thought i would service my C220 CDI 2002 withoit a workshop manual. Bad idea. Sucked 3 litres of what appeared to be engine oil. Then realised it was ATF fuild.

2 questions. Can I simply pour 3 lites of new ATF fluid through the MB sevice 'hole' -see image and solve this problem?

Finally where should the oil be sucked from. Anyone got a diagram or can show m eon uploaded image?

Thank sfor the help. On the way to Halfords to but ATF.

Need car for work in the morning!

Mike

Yes, the ATF is installed via this dipstick tube.
As for your engine oil dipstick, not too familiar with the diesel but I think it should be front of the engine. I think you can just barely see the edge of it in your pic, slightly left of engine centre.
Personally I prefer to drain via the sump plug, but it's your choice.
Cheers, Tom.

ATF and engine oil-where do you remove oil in C220 CDI?

Tom

Thanks for posting. Have replaced the ATF fluid, no easy way of checking levels but things are as they were before I started!

I have been told-but have not checked-that there is no sump drain plug on the C220 CDI 2002 model hence my purchase of a vacuum oil remover. Perhaps I should have checked first. However my source is usually reliable.

With regard to where the oil is dained from. Yes I can see what you mean in front of the engine. Not sure what this does-looks part of the engine 'breathing system' Looks as though it has to be dismantled to take off.
'Frightened to touch' will have to get a manual.

Regards

Its worth checking on your car regarding if there is an oil drain plug. I looked on the parts catalogue and it shows 2 variations of sump, one with and one without. It seems a strange omission, I wonder if Mercedes in their infinite wisdom decided it was another source of leaks, and by its exclusion, they would also discourage more home mechanics and small garages, who wouldn't have the suction equipment - thus keeping their revenue-earning service departments' pockets lined.

Interesting fact: Beetles didn't have a an oil filter! - but they did have a plate on the bottom of the sump with a metal strainer/mesh in it. So, you'd have to take this plate off and clean it up at each oil change (every 3000 miles). Maybe you could periodically take the sump off and clean it up, to preserve the longevity of the engine and prevent quantities of 'sludge' build up.

Sump Drain Plug and dipstick

Paul

I will check and see whether there is a sump plug next weekend. I think it is unlikely however.

Tom the C220 CDI definitetly does not have a dipstick.

Reminds me of the marvellous centrifugal filter system on the old Simca 1300/1500's, bolted on front of the crankshaft pulley. You just removed the front plate and literally dug out the accumulated/solidified 'gunge' every couple of years or so! Just a pity these engines were let down by their rocker shaft lubrication arrangement.

C220 CDI does have a sump drain plug

I can now confirm that the 2002 C220 CDI does have a sump drainplug. Also the oil cannot be sucked out from the top! No dip stick!

Thanks to all who posted.
