Hi,

I own a 1998 Mercedes C180 Estate Automatic with ASR.

I have a whining diff at around 60-70 mph. I have tried to obtain a sensibly priced second-hand unit without much success. I have been reliably informed that my diff is a 3.64-1 and without the ASR sensor built on. I have been offered a diff unit by a breaker however, when I asked him to check the ratio, he has told me that the diff is a 40 X 10 which works out to be a 4.00-1 ratio. I have spoken to many people who say there is no such ratio for a Mercedes C180 diff! is that correct?? If he has mis-counted the teeth and it is actually 40 X 11, this works out at exactly 3.64-1 (which is what I need!).

Can any of you guys (or girls!) help me??

Cheers,

Chris

Welcome,Chris,
Find your car using the first six nos. of your vin in this site ; http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb0.asp?TP=1 . Go to rear axle then differential, it seems the only option for C180 automatic is ,as you say 3.64-1, but other capacities will obviously have different ratios.

Check to see if the diff oil needs topped up. I wouldn't worry about whine unless it is really loud.
