Hi all, my 1999 c180 estate (T202) suffers from a loud clicking through the speakers when listening to Medium Wave on the radio. It is consistent with the engine speed but it seems to click at around half engine speed if that makes sense. Is this a common problem and is there an easy solution?

Radio help please

I guess we have no radio experts here.

Could anyone let me know whether they have any problems when listening to medium wave in the UK in the t202 c180.

I wondered if it was to do with the aerial being integrated into the rear screen on the estate. ( I think the saloon has a metal sticky up aerial.

At least if I know whether it is normal or not it will help me to fix the problem.

I am not an expert, however, I have heard that when the ground wiring is not corect, one will end up with such noise. Also, is this happening with all the speakers or just one specific? If it is just one, check the wiring, there might be something wrong.
Best of luck

If you have a 4-cyl, petrol engine, each plug fires every 2 engine revolutions.

As you have one click at half engine RPM, I would suspect that you may have a faulty shield on one of the spark-plug leads.

Check the state and condition of each lead carefully, clean them (rag with WD40) and make sure that the metal screen that clips over the top of each plug has a good contact to the engine metal for a good ground.

radio noise

I may be wrong here, but there are noise supressors that you can buy and DIY instal in your car. They can be bought at car radio stores. These suppress the car's internal electrical disturbances from affecting the radio signals being received. Try these first, lots cheaper, but get the car radio shop to diagnose for you and try it out before paying. If it doesn't work, then its something worse! 8)

What you are hearing (clicks) is RF interference from the engine spark-plugs.

Suppressors (R-C filters) can work if connected to the noisy component (source). For example, on older cars, they are usually fitted to the contact points in the distributer. The alternator circuit will also have a supressor (otherwise you'll get a whirring noise). Window motors and wiper-motors, likewise. The suppressors reduce the electrical noise in the car wiring.

Most radios, MB/Becker included will already have line suppressors fitted to their input power supply stages, but these protect against conducted interference (on the power wiring) and cannot do anything against interference coming in as a Radio (RF) signal.

Marconi's first radio transmission was done with a spark machine. Electrical sparks produce a very wide spectrum of RF noise, which you will pick up on most AM bands.

The solution is, therefore, to shield your spark-plugs properly. In this case you should check the condition of the plug wiring and metal shields that fit over the plugs. Also check the condition of your distributer cap and rotor.
