help c200 1996 failed emissions

Hi my 1996 Mercered C200 failed its emissions today. Where do I start. There is a sound like stones in the exhaust sometimes, could the cat be shattered and would this cause the problem. Could anyone Email me some idea's at Dmotortrader@aol.com Thank you

Hi. Afraid it sounds like the cat. has indeed given up the ghost, tho' I am no 'expert'. More highly knowledgeble people will do doubt come in and confirm.
