HELP!! Diesel pump timing on sprinter 311cdi

Can any body tell me how to check wether the diesel pumps timing is out please

its ticking over asif its missing but somebody said it migth be the deisel pump timing. I had the head gasket done few month ago and to cut a long story sort the guy disappeared so i was left to put it all back together. It runs fine over 2k on the motorway etc and pulling off from a junction is a bit lumpy and noisy. It also puffs a load of black smoke when i first start it in the morning but doesnt hardly smoke any other time

If any body is interested ive uploaded some photos showing the timing of my sprinter. There were a few guys saying the engine would not start and that i would have bigger problems then a little lumpy tickover etc. I had drove 6week and over 1k miles with this and apart from it being a little lumpy on tickover it drove fine. just incase somebody has got the same problem or has bought a van with it, the cam alignment is a possability
