Hi,

My 1994 E200 (with 260,000 on the clock) went in for it's MOT on Thursday and thankfully passed :)

BUT

Upon putting it into drive (auto box) leaving the MOT station there was a loud thud and suddenly no drive; after checking under the car (after pushing back onto MOT test ramps) it was plain to see the snaped drive shaft :-( nightmare...

Anyway car now home and jacked up; I've a replacement which I picked up from a mercedes breakers here in the north east (for £75) and I'm ready to fit.

I've removed the locking stud and bit going into the rear (near-side) wheel hub but I'm having trouble in removing the nuts (6-of them) from the remaining section going into the diff....

Any help, tips, help !!!

Cheers guys

The nuts on the couplings are done up to a high torque, always easier with shock, as all the pulling in the world will just break or bend your spanners.
As with a wheel nut you can bend up the wrench handle by pulling where as one kick and off it comes.

clean out the hole in the head of the bolt with a small screwdriver on insert the spline tool and give it a tap with a hammer try to keep the tool straight while trying to loosen the bolts. if the holes are rounded you will need to hammer a socket onto the head of the bolt to remove it. they shouldn't be that tight they are only torqued to 50lbs

interesting that it happened at the MOT....

every time i take my car to that place they whack it hard here and there so it's no wonder things go wrong,,

my previous merc (a 190d) went in for its test and failed, that was fair enough as it was second hand and extremely cheap and not looked after for yearrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrs

after getting it home, hit reverse and clunkkkkkkkkkkkk this awful sound, the back handbrake assembly fell off cracking the rear brake disc and pulling the handbrake cable out.

the damage it did was expensive to fix, but all was eventually well

that taught me to pay very close attention to brake discs/brake pads...

cheers
