Hell i am in trouble
I got a e class as a gift from my wife that she bought in spain recently
we live in west africa
i am happy with the car (even if the user manual is written in German) however this evening i went out and upon leaving the car i pressed the locking button on the key fob and walked away seeing that the lights flashed their usual 3 times however for some reason my finger stayed on the button and the lights flashed 6 timesmore when i returned to my car i unlocked and the lights flashed once but when i inserted the fob into the ignition total silence nothing and i cannot start my car
at the moment my car is about 60 kilometres away from home i have had to pay someone to look after it for me o i could take a taxi and return home with my baby boy
please is there anything anyone cansuggest i am so desperate i have looked through the forum and the referrences i see all make comments about red and green lights mine does not have them it has 3 buttons 1 for locking 1 for unlocking (padlocks) and 1 for opening the trunk
HELP ME PLEASE

andy

its 1.30 in the morning in the uk so you are unlikely to get many answers as everyone with any sense is in bed !

The suggestion to remove the negative terminal lead from the battery is your best hope if you need to sort it quickly. Mercedes electronics are notoriously complex and disconnecting the battery for a while (up to 1 hour to be sure) is similar to shutting down your computer for a while when it plays up and then restarting it.

You could try some of the other merc club sites which have a large usa membership - as it is early evening there which should be a popular time.

Let us know how you get on andy

In bed but still working - insomnia?

Hi andygambia

Resetting the cars electronics by disconnecting the battery is clearly your best option but as your car is probably an hour, or more, away from home, I can understand why you would want a range of options to take with you.

I'm surprised the problem occurred in the first place but apparently it is not unknown to happen, according to one member.

The 3-button key fob you describe, with remote control, is typical of Mercedes. You may not have noticed the little LED indicator flashing because it is of quite short duration.

I assume resetting the ASSYST indicator is of lesser importance than getting your car home?

How did you manage to leave your other baby in the car? Do you have alternative transport available?

I wish I had a wife who could afford to buy me a Mercedes. Is it new?

What would you have bought instead?

Good Luck in retrieving your car.

REGARDS Phil

Hey Phil quite a list you set me there
seems to me like i am on my way back inside the bush armed with a 10mm + 13mm spanner to remove the ****** battery and of course a prayer!?!?!
your questions....i did not see the little red indicator i NEVER have either, who realy gives a toss for the assyst in circumstances like these?
and wake up old son my other baby is my CAR, i also wish i had a GOOD wife who would buy me a mercedes as it happens i just got a wife who bought me one that is less than 18 months old but it is for sale if you are interested (i am talking about the wife)
Phil in the present predicament i would have bought a bicycle.....oh hell the taxi is on its way and i am buggered

Hi again Andy. Probably by this time you'll have tried what was suggested, hopefully successfully. I discovered this cure purely by accident. I was taking the opportunity while I thought the car was 'incapacitated' to give the battery an external charge when, on refitting it, all began to work normally, including the alarm siren which hadn't been operational for weeks.

Cheers, Tom.

Unfortunately NOT
I am still unable to get my car going
I have had a few on the spur of the moment mechanics who have passed me by and suggested i rip out all the ignition wiring and hot wire it but i dont really want to go to such an extreme
it is costing me a small fortune in security and taxi services to and fro
anymore suggestions? the doors open and lock as does the boot put nothing happens when i stick the fob in the ignition no sucking noise(had a girlfriend once who told me nothing happened when i put it in the ignition,,,,,look i said HAD didnt last long)
please am still open to ideas

Maybe there is something else wrong.

Are there any lights on the dash at all? or do they come on and die?

Is there anyway you can get the car home? It might save a lot off worry and running about.

Is there not a key somewhere to disable the alarm system? On one of my cars, there is a key in the back of the glove compartment, on another there is a rubber bit you pull out on the alarm unit and insert the key.

someone said earlier i will give birth to a cow with all this worrying and i am making the christening tomorrow
i really dont know what else to do
as i keep saying i can open the locks and lock it but i cant get a squeak out of it when i put the key in the ignition
i was talking to a MB dealership in the UK (damned expensive call ) and after arounfd 45 minutes of being pushed from 1 guy to another just because i said i was calling from ****** africa they were looking for someone who spoke african i have been here over 11 years and didnt know such a language existed, anyway they said i got to synch the key, guess what? wheni asked them to explain how he said they cant explain as it is very difficult, but can i please bring the car into them and they will sort it!!!!!!!!!!!
i am at my wits

Take both key fobs with you, if the battery disconnection does not work try leaving the key in the ignition slot for a while, it can loose touch with the car and needs to run through all the available codes, It will look like nothing is happening but the key and the car will be communicating, can take an hour or more, we often leave them overnight in the workshop and they are fine by morning (not practical in your situation granted), don't be tempted to force the ignition switch, they are designed to be tamper proof and you will just destroy it.

I realise this is quite an obvious suggestion, but have you checked all the fuses?

Please please please tell me you are JOKING when someone in MB asked for someone who spoke African?

I would not hesitate to write to MB UK and complain very seriously about that comment, and do it quickly. Calls will be recorded so the conversation is probably on a SAN somewhere no doubt.

What an insult on top of your hassles. I've been following this thread, can't offer much advice unfortunately, but hope you sort it soon.
