I have a CLK200 Komp, on start up when I put the car in either drive or reverse the rattling noise from the engine is unbelievable until I start driving, once driving there is no noise, ?

Thanks in advance

Possibly one of the following:

1. Failing Catalytic converters

2. Cat heat shield

3. Poly belt tensioner / damper (would go with an ingrease in revs whilst stationary)

I would go with the Poly-belt tensioner, same problem with my W210 a couple of years ago.

Another sympton is the rattle goes louder and then quieter but it seems like the engine is racing then dying racing and then dying

So what do I need to do? It is only on start up once travelling no problem, will it be expensive?

T212 facelift, 2013. A few toys including pan roof, 19" rims, Harmon Kardon, nappa, privacy glass.

Part is about £48 (from memory for my T210, 2001), fitting time took my local garage buddy 35 minutes, so work out your labour costs - dependent upon your garage. Doesn't need to be Merc at £105 / hour.

I will take a bet on it being a heat shield over the exhaust

might not be the tensioner but the belt damper, depends on what year it is.

Its on a 52 plate, when I am driving along it is fine, its only when I first put it in drive or reverse
