Hi I drive a 1996 sclass 280 - Had it for years but 2 months ago it started developing gear box problems, i had the gear box oil and all filters changed and it improved until TODAY...It is an Auto 4 speed box.:(

It is okay slipping into first and then second but then the revs go up to 4.5 and struggles to get into third, i have tonight been using the 2nd and 3rd gear options on my auto box and is has helped but not much.

I live in East surrey Near readhill and need a good mechanic, and i presume a replacement/recon gear box:

Anyone out there who can help.

Hi Mobile

I've just this last hour had my transmission fluid and filter changed, 80k on the clock year 2000 S320 petrol (W220 I think). The old fluid came out like chocolate syrup with a green tinge to it, the new stuff was bright pink like that sweet syrup you throw over an ice cream cone, so the other stuff was gone bad by teh looks of it. Anyway there was a few grains of metal in the bottom of the tray and the transmission guy said it was in the very early stages of sh1tting itself that I should consider an overhaul of the gearbox/torque converter cost approx €2,500 incl. VAT. Now with the new transmission fluid I can no longer feel the gear changes where each one before the fluid change was lumpy and the odd slip (jumping from 1800rpm to 3000 rpm before catching a gear) usually between 3rd & 4th.

Hope this is of some benefit, might just need a fluid change.

When did you last have the gearbox oil changed?

Take it to a specialist or a dealer and have them check the ATF level (if you don't already have a dipstick that is) first.
