Hi

I broke a n/s front coil spring on my 1998 W202 C240T. With a big struggle I managed to get the broken spring out (disabling the car of course!). After an afternoon of further struggling (with no success) with my standard external spring compressors I checked into the job and have been told that because of the limited space I need an 'internal' coil spring compressor (ie one which uses a single shaft accessed through the hole under the coil in the lower suspension arm) to put the new ones in. The price of a fancy one from a specialist tool supplier seems to be in the hundreds of pounds. Does anyone know where I can rent/borrow one of these? (I live in Surrey)

Cheers

I will probably get abuse for this post but here goes.
If you compress the spring with external spring compressors then secure with heavy gauge wire you can remove the clamps.
Now insert the spring.
bolt everything back and lower onto axle stand.
the spring is now compresed by the weight of the car
It is now safe to remove the securing wire
Job done.
Hope this helps.

I read somewhere on the forum that someone broke a spring compressor once. I would not like to be in the vicinity if that happened so make sure its beefy enough.

Thanks for all the replies folks.

In the end I managed to borrow a Genuine DB one made by KLANN.

Cheers
