Hi everyone,

Im new here and hoping to pick your brains.

I have a C220 CDi on a 51 plate, and the problem I have is fumes leaking from a strange unit near the exhaust manifold. I am unsure what this unit is as I have searched high and low but cannot find a workshop manual for the car (if anyone knows where I can get one of these I would be eternally grateful).

The unit where the leak is happening is directly underneath the air filter box and next to the manifold. The unit is a square shape with 2 doughnuts on one side with a pipe in the middle of the doughnuts, this unit then connects to the exhaust manifold. It is black with soot and there is a smell of exhaust fumes inside the car when driving the car has also been using more oil than usual.

Any ideas anyone??

Does the engine sound as if it has noisy tappets when ticking over .If so then it will be leaking injector seals

Not necessarily, it may just be a split or leak from your boost pipe (usually associated with a hissing sound when driving). Take the hose off the turbo inlet and pinch the impeller centre shaft and see if it has excessive movement in it; a very small amout is OK but if it's like stiring porridge you may need a reconditioned turbo (see if it spins freely). Normally if the turbo is knackered, you will have a very smokey exhaust and high usage of engine oil (essentially you're pumping engine oil into the induction system). If you haven't noticed this, I would think that it's likely to be something less serious. If you're not sure you should take advice from someone that you trust.

cats are very common for blocking on these engines. this will cause the clamp to spread and fumes to leak out, check if there is black residue on any of your exhaust clamps, this can indicate blocked cats

just re-read your post, sounds exactly like a blocked cat, cant say which one, upper or lower???, your age car wont have a dpf so a decat would be fine,

usually when the cats are blocked it causes injector seals to leak, remove your engine covers and check around your injectors for leakage,

If it is blocked cats then a trip on the mortoway is whats needed this should burn the sooty deposits out of the cat, a diesel cat will self clean on a good 70mph blast. Short journy sysndrome will block a cat, never get warm enough to burn of the deposits.
