Help needed newbie c class 250Td

Hi i have just purchased a C Class 250td 1998 the garage that sold me the car said it had a full service history that they would send on to me. This however has not happened and the garage now say that they cannot get it from the previous keeper. the car has done 103000 miles and seems to run really well. My concern is the auto box it is the 5 speed one can anyone tell me how you check the oil level as there is no dipstick only a plug fitted. Also how often should this oil be changed and is it ATF or is it a synthetic oil. As someone told me they don't think that it uses ATF oil in the 5 speed auto box.

Hi & Welcome,

Until last year the gearbox was seen as sealed for life, that is now no longer the case and a change is recommended at 40K miles. As yours will have a torque converter drain plug then you can change all 7 ltrs. Find an independent MB specialist or do it yourself following the excellent guide by Parrot of Doom in the DIY section. Just make sure you use the correct spec MB ATF.

I had the same issue.
I went to buy a dip stick from mercedes and the guys said that he would check for me!!
(Basically there is a hole with a red safety cap top left of the engine.. I think it is where I filled the gearbox oil. He simply measured this is in the usual way)

Hi Suki you got more help than i did. I went in MB and was told it's £80 for a dipstick no offer to check it for me.
