Cluster

Yes

You buy special dash pulling tools from MB cost about six pound. insert these either side of the instrument cluster twist 90 degrees and pull evenly
Result :-

1 the cluster comes out you replace bulbs and refitt

2 the glass shatters you need to buy new cluster at 360 pounds plus .

another option to remove lower dash panel and push cluster out from back replace bulbs as required.

On the whole less risk if you let MB dealer do it for you cost is about

half hour plus bulbs ( lot less than new cluster and no risk)

cluster

the tool is inserted at both sides about the apex of the radius twist tool 90 degrees so that the hook engages on the back of the instrument cluster and pull. This should not be done bt the DIY person it could cost a new cluster

The way I would do it would be to undo the lower dash panel and push the clster from behind.

be sure to disconnect the battery before unpluging and repugglugging so you dont get any fault lights!

if you really want to do it properly remove the steering wheel! I know many people whom have damaged their dashs/steering....

This is one of the simpler jobs that anyone can do,and one of the easiest cars to do,most cars will involve unscrewing the dash panels.

As Koovin said, disconnect battery first, as if your srs bulb is pulled accidently with battery connected, it will stay lit, and you will have to fork out £30/£40 pounds to your friendly MB dealer to do a reset.

When you re-connect battery, you will need to do a window re-set:

Close all windows completely and then hold down the close part of each switch for 3/5 seconds.

All,
I am toying with removing the cluster from my 210 and stripping it to fix the contacts to the clock and temp displays to get them working. (will probably replace the bulbs at the same time)
So,
1) Can you actually get the cluster out of the car with the wheel in situ (looks a bit tight to me).
2) Anyone ever attempted this repair?

I don't want to make anything worse but I can't read the clock or the temp guage, though the centre matrix is fine. Not really worth a £400+ to fix but happy if its a couple of hours and a can of contact cleaner.

thanks.

Nope - I flogged the car.
However, the moment I traded her in, all sorts of people came out of the woodwork offering to fix them!! I did have a go myself but I got it down to the bare boards and still couldn't get to the offending connectors.

seems a new cluster would be a quicker fix in the long run then

Quick but pricey - they were talking £650 plus another £100 for fitting and programming. The repairers were talking in the region of a couple of hundred all-in.
I had a chap who was going to look at it for me but when I told the wife one Sunday I was going to take the car off the road that week and send the cluster off, she didn't like the idea and insisted we go down to the dealer for a quick look round first. "Just to see what our options are". The rest was inevitable ...

How much of that was planned??
In my experience if "the management" comes up with the idea it goes ahead. The problem can be getting them to come up with the idea.
