Just changed my E300 td est 1997 for a C220cdi auto estate, great mpg after first two weeks. Wishing to tow a caravan, the caravan club state only the E300 td needs additional cooling. Mercedes workshop says no additional cooling required but change fluid every 40k ( mechanics view ). Our friends at kenlowe say they are both wrong.

Has any one got advise or infact fitted an oil cooler to the C2220 cdi, if so replies please, not much space under the hood anywhere.

Dont see why you will need an oil cooler to pull a caravan as they are not that heavy.....if you really want one why not fit it in front of the radiator..........

I'm not sure about ditching thermostats

It could cause all kinds of other problems, such as ages to warm up, over cooling on over-run down hill. Perhaps an over-size rad is the answer. Perhaps one from one of the larger engined models, if their rads are larger.

if ur car is not overheating than u don't have 2 do anything 'thermostat' and i think u don't need oil cooler.ditaching thermostat is 4 preventing ur car from over heating,u r right it will cause prob like warm up but this is 4 summer u can put it back in winter (if ur car is overheating) ;)

I have not towed a caravan for about ten years now but when I did I had an oil cooler fitted for peace of mind as much as anything else. I 'ts not just the weight of the van as mentioned in a previous post. I'ts a combination of weight and the fairly poor aerodynamics of even the best designed caravan.Once your caravan is loaded it is quite easy to push the weight up to well in excess of a ton which I suspect is more than doubling the weight that your engine and transmission is normally pulling. Two essentials in my humble opinion, stabiliser and oil cooler.

Why did you not buy a manual then if you are worried about an auto.
