Hi,
I would eliminate the possibility of it being the low level oil warning light, and top the oil level to the max of the dipstick first.

best check,(messey), remove oil cap when running, if you get a s..T load of oil flying out the whole then you got good oil pressure, if none comes out and it looks dry in there turn it of and seek help!!!!

At the start of this thread, you said the oil level on the dipstick was down to 3 quarters? If that is only 1,000 miles since the oil change, one of several things is happening:
it was not filled correctly at the oil change (quite possible, but careless), or
you are using a lot of oil (would probably be obvious - check for a smoke screen in the rear view mirror when accelerating on a hot engine), or
you are losing oil - check for puddles on the garage floor or where the car sits overnight.

I would go with other advice in the thread first. Oil level checking is very sensitive to the position of the car, so make sure it is on a flat surface, cold engine. Once you have topped up and achieved a good reading there, check it daily for a while under the same conditions. If the level is good and the car works well, the warning light may well just be spurios but would need fixing. If you are patient with the simple things first, it can save you moving to quickly towards pessimistic wrong answers, and big bills!

Just to chip in here mine is the 111 series 4 cylinder 2.3 Litre supercharged engine that Merc used up untill '99 I think. I found that it doesnt like semi-synthetic oil. i was experiencing similar oil consumption running on Castrol Magnetec 10w/40. Since changing to Shell Helix Ultra a fully synthetic 4w/40 it doesnt use any!! Moral youse gets wat u pay 4!

spillage when filling possibly, its possible a sensor is on its way out, to fix you need to remove the sump as its in there. An engine flush and fresh oil might fix it though.

This will be caused by Item 35 in the link being U/S. This engine shown is the kompressor engine but yours is the same or very similar.
