I'm getting confused. Quite common, so my wife tells me...but
I am trying to accurately guage the level of ATF fluid in my transmission, because of a small leak.
I know the engine has to be warm (80 c which is achieved after a 20 min run). That's ok.
But I get 2 different levels when measuring under 2 different circumstances:
1. engine RUNNING with the gear lever in park = the ATF is 7mm below the min line
2. engine STOPPED with the gear lever in park = the ATF is at the max line (spot on!)
Both measurements are taken seconds of each other...and so the temp is the same. The transmission is shifting up and down the gears fine.
Which level should I believe? as I dont want to overfill.
BTW: this is for my w124 1989 300ce coupe
Any advice or common practices appreciated
