Hi guys,

I am currently driving a Mercedes CLK and I am moving to Australia soon, bought myself a house there through bluewatertrade.com. It seems that the shipping costs to much and there is a risk involved to take my car over there. Do you think its worth getting a CLK in Australia? I mean because of repairs/spareparts if there are any.

Hi,
I don,t think parts should be an issue but there are several forum members from down under maybe they could give you a few pointers.
One thing i would say is if it has,nt got air con i would,nt bother taking it with you.
Mate of mine use to export 2nd hand cars to Australia they were worth double there money over there the dealers would refuse point blank to take any cars without air-con or electric windows.
He use to use a shipping agent in Southampton it would cost £1000-£1500 depending on the size car and the ship it was going. i,m sure they were insured for the trip against damage they put in a container

European cars are much more expensive in australia. Most cars there are Japanese or holdens or fords. The dealer and servicing network for eu cars are not developed as in UK. Servcing will be more expensive.

One last point, do not even think of driving over 100km/h anywhere in Aussi or over 50km/h in cities.

my friend took all 4 of his cars when he went, his stripped his BMW daily driver and fitted it with A/C before he went, the others were only occasional cars so he didnt bother, he sent them all in one container although he didnt mention price, he did say it took him the best part of a year to get the registrations and paperwork sorted out though once he got there.

He also mentioned the aussie obsession with speeding, but he reckons he still manages to have fun in his 300bhp+ mk2 escort so i guess its like over here, keep your eyes open.

Just to give you an idea, I shipped a G Wagon...almost 2 tons...in its own shipping container to Hong Kong and it cost me £525, which I thought was very reasonable...suggest you contact Elite Shipping...google them and you should find the Tel No.

give me some time , i work for southampton docks , and we ship australian cargo via williams walanius , ill get a price for you , also if your conserned about who loads your car , im sure i can sort it out for you that i put the vehicle on the ship as i supervise the operation and location of cargo on the ships for export. if you seriously want to ship it via southampton send me a pm.

p.s shipping via container is alot more expensive than shipping via ro/ro (roll on / roll off) because of dunage/wood needed and the space it takes up. the only thing i advise if you ship via ro/ro is to remove your car stereo and any belongings as the ship calls on various ports before reaching australia and things go missing.

I run and own a transport/shipping company in the UK and I would like to know when you paid such low price?

Containers to asia costs very little as the Chinese wants/needs all they can get. However, even £525 would not cover the costs of the actual shipping. Add to that all extras that are now being added by shipping lines. For example, Security Charge, BAF, CAF etc etc etc.

aye its ironic nothings been done about that at southampton , 80% of containers there are empty , and i agree , thats a ridicolously low price for shipping in a container.
