Help please -E270cdi noise

Hi hope you could help me out, I have an E270cdi with about 72k on the clock - fully serviced etc, it recently went to a merc independant garage for its service where the air filter was replaced, shortly after i noticed the car made a 'whirring' noise either when slowing or removing my foot from the accelerator. I have taken it back to the garage who suggest it may be a dry bearing but the noise seems to be coming from the the pipe just below the air filter, i think it is near the turbo.

has anyone any ideas? could you help me, i feel paranoid but it can be heard outside the car and i dont want to be lumbered with a big bill

mine makes a whine noise around 40mph which can also be felt through the wheel. It's been alleviated by new engine mounts and oddly a gearbox oil change - still there in the background though not intrusive any more.
Engine mounts do make a big difference on all the 270s. MLs are notorious for it but the rest suffer too.
