Hi Guys,

I have a small situation: On my 1998 C240 V6, the handle of the oil dipstick broke. My mechanic then went an glued another handle on. However I’m worried that in the process of fixing it, he may have altered the length of it. He admitted that the reading on the dipstick may now be “either half a liter more or half a liter less” than it actually is.

If anyone here has a 1997/1998 C240 V6 Engine Face Lift Model (the later engine type – with 12 spark plugs)… please can you measure the length of your dipstick and post it here or send me a Private Message.

I need the length from the end of the dipstick from the very bottom to the start of the handle (the handle sits on top of the dipstick tube) – as shown in this diagram: - What’s the length of x ?

Thanks in advance Guys

Just for reference this dipstick will be the same from cars made from 08-98 through to the end 2001, the only things that limit this is that the dip stick was omitted as from 09-99

Thanks for the reply Malcom. Do you think all the mercs (C180, C200 C230) have the same length dip stick? There aren't very many c240's in this shape around and I can never leave work early enough to stop by at the dealership.

This is not easy , though all 722.6 boxes use the same casings the filling dip stick tubes vary in length according to the car it is fitted to.

Why not make one out of curtain wire as in the DIY section,, you can then dip with your own stick and compare the two

I think the O/P is refferring to the sump engine oil dipstick rather than the gearbox one.

Yes, thats correct. I'm looking for the length sump engine oil dipstick, but I will definitely make a dipstick for the transmission oil also.
