almost impossible to guess at and you are most likely going to have to strip the engine down until you find the fault

Personally I'd take the car back on a low loader and dump it on the sellers drive.

Unless the rest of the car is exceptional it may turn out to be uneconomical to repair.

Might have the answer!!

Dude listen

I was able to get my hands on a cd rom manual which even covers the 190 cossies, thats how I was able to do some work on my 2.3-16. I have just checked and I think it covers all models starting 1981....however this is a big application and runs from CD, but if you need a particular area let me know I'll try look in system...

You have successfully purchased a 'spares/repair' car. The bit you need to repair is the engine; the rest of it is currently spares, until you have a working engine.

At the very least, you should take the rocker cover off and look at the timing chain, action of the camshaft and check its valve timing is correct. Also, remove the distributor and check its drive is working too. It could be fluid in the cylinders, it would be worthwhile taking the spark plugs out and trying again to turn it by hand. And while they're out, filling each cylinder with oil and turning it over and over.

If you are interested, I think I have a spare Haynes manual for this model.

without wishing to offend you....

As has been said before what you have there is a spares or repair car, if you get around to engine rebuilding on a car of that age be ready for lots of expense.

If the engine is knackered then I'd suggest one of two options,

1, buy a second hand engine from a specialist breaker such as Mercman, The Garage, Dronsfields etc. It's going to cost you money but it will be cheaper than a full rebuild

2, break the car and sell it for spares - if the bodywork and interior are good you will most likely make a profit.

My heart says keep the car and rebuild it and if it were springtime I probably would but with winter just around the corner and the prospect of cold, wet and dark evenings my head says you've been ripped off, take it on the chin get shot of the car and recoup as much of your losses as you can.

Just a thought though - remove the starter motor then try and turn the engine manually.

LOL....I have a starter motor too, if you want to swap-test one. Its off a 110 motor, though.

In fact, I have a number of other parts which might be useful....
