Help Please

I have been offered a 1985 200 estate for very little money, problem is it runs rough. I have looked at the carb and underneath there seems to be something snapped off an electrical connector. I have been told it is the Mixture adjustment solenoid or thermal valve about £100 from merc dealers can anyone help me with this.

Its for cutting the engine cleanly (they used to run on a bit) fed by a relay that supplies it with power for a few seconds when you switch off, pushes the jet up against the needle to shut fuel off (not required for normal use although as it is part of the main jet it controlls the mixture (loosen lock nut and screw it in/out)
