Hello everyone. just bought a 2002 ML 270cdi. Could anyone please provide me with a simple formula, to enable me calculate, aprroximately how much mpg i am getting against, what I am supposed to get

it seems to be getting through a lot of diesel and my local garage can not seem to find anything wrong. I know i would have to take type of usage into consideration e.t.c but just want to be able to calculate roughly what I am using against what am roughly supposed to get.

either in mpg or in litres

thanking you all in advance

The only accurate way to measure your fuel consumption is to use brim-to-brim fill ups.

First thing is to fill your vehicle to the brim with fuel and note the mileage (a)

When you next fill up, fill to the brim again and note both the mileage (b) and the number of litres used to refill the vehicle (c)

Now, calculate the miles covered by subtracting the mileage reading (a) from mileage reading (b).

Multiply this result by 4.545 and then divide the result by the number of litres used to refill the vehicle (c). This will give you the average miles per gallon achieved for all driving between the fill ups.

For example...

Mileage when first filled up = 34,256 (a)
Mileage when next filled up = 34,629 (b)
Litres pumped to refill = 51.69 litres

step 1: (b) - (a) = 373 - this is the mileage covered
step 2: 373 x 4.545 = 1695.285
step 3: 1695.285 / 51.69 = 32.8 - this is the average mpg you're looking for and you can compare it with your expected value

you need to refer to your handbook

there are published consumption figures from the various statutory tests the manufacturer has to perform.

for instance 10litres/100 km = 28.37 mpg. The conversion is 4.54 (litres) = 1 Gallon.
100km= 62.5 miles.

10litres/100km= 1litre/10 km. 10km=6.25miles. 6.25 x4.54= 28.375 mpg.

Perhaps some other ML 270 owners can post up what they get.

I get approx 25mpg in and around town and 32mpg on long motorway journeys, cruising at 80mph (indicated and c/c engaged) = 77mph True.

New to this - only joined yesterday.

Being something of a control & measurement freak, I have a spreadsheet that I use to record all my motoring costs, including fuel consumption.

I'm particularly interested myself at the moment because I've just paid a small fortune (£650) for a B service and am seeing a negative impact on consumption (even after the authorised service agent fixed the pipe they cracked during the service...)

If there's a mechanism for posting an attachment, I'd be happy to make the Excel file available (300k).

Good luck with your problems!
