My 92 SL500 stock radio is cutting out the woofers while the mid and high remain going, it gets worse with volume and is OK at very low volumes. I suspect there is an amp for the woofers. Where is it, how can I check it? Any input is appreciated.
I should also note that sometimes the radio station has a very strange type of static then clears up, separate problem?

oops

in my previous cars i had a similar prob, but with my own stereo upgrades
first thing i checked was loose wiring on the subs,
get a voltmetre and see if on the amp you are pulling a clean 12v, if not this cuts the amp on power drains/big basslines. a dirty ground connection is common.

Your Mercedes
2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
If you have the BOSE system (standard in USA) you will find the amp under the passenger seat.
