CLS 320 CDI remapped (W219)
Dear Members of Forum,

I have a 1983 280SL and would like to get a powered hood?

I have done some enquiries, which I have been told from new, Mercedes-Benz would outsource this work to a company and charge around £3500.00 back in 1983.

However i have spoken to Melvin at Jacksons who has not heard of this.

I also called Carl Wilford at Autobarn Classic and Sports cars, who has told me that he has seem a rare few in his time but does not know who installed the kit?

Does anyone out there know anyone in the UK who can do this or knows anymore ??

Please help.:)

Something rang a bell when you said powered roof for a 107. I don't know if they're still around, but in June's Merc Enth page 103 it mentions a company called Autoroof fitting a US made powered hood.

Just thought it's worth mentioning.

There was one on e-bay a couple of months ago

starting at £500, and with a tame engineer on line to fit for an extra fee. I can't remember exactly what it went for, but there wasn't that much bidding.
I'll see if I can find anything from the like-minded souls in Germany and the US.
I have to say it did look hideously complicated, with all sorts of wiring and relays and rams. I would run a mile rather than have to try and fit it.

it went back in December

which shows just how bad my memory is getting. None on e-bay now either.
I'll see if our American friends can help

To be honest - don't bother. They are horrendously unreliable and expensive to maintain - getting spare parts proved fruitless for another **** member.

this reply from Dr. Dummy at 107sl.com in the US

Reponse: My records show a phone number in the UK as Mechanize convertible top (AUTO TOP LTD- London, England - +4477648 17114. Country Code (00) 44). Beng here in the US (and not familiar with either the Time Zones or how to phone the UK, or even if this number is still good!), I wish you luck. Should you have success, please let me know. I, too, am interested. OK? OK.

The mechanisms were designed and manufactured in the US and just distributed here. I believe that company went out of business a number of years ago.
