Hi

I have a 1997 SLK230 and I have just tried to open the boot, on doing so the latch doesnt work, it seems very loose as if it isn't doing anything, when using the remote i can hear a noise from the boot but thats it......also when using the key in the drivers door not all the doors open on the central locking, just the drivers door????

Can anyone help please??

Many Thanks
Sean :(

HI Sean, do you have a key for the boot?
When you push the lock inwards to open dose the lock spring back out again?

Hello and welcome with your not such good news.

Just thinking, when my top is almost closed on the SL I can stop the roof with the boot open, though in reverse, see if you can see what has come off or broken

Television...I am unable to open the roof as the safety cover is not pulled out in the boot.

Spray some PTFE into the lock barrel and keep inserting the key, then it will eventually go in and turn, 99% do

I think Malcolm that WD40 would be better than PTFE as it is penetration rather than lubrication that is need at the moment.

The fact that the key won’t go all the way into the lock (assuming it is the correct key for that lock) means that one or more of the brass levers inside the lock barrel have seized.

The best thing to do is to flood the keyhole with WD40 or another spray type penetrating oil. Push the oil spray can straw inside the keyhole as far as it will go and spray for several seconds, repeat every 10 minutes, for about an hour, occasionally try to work the key further into the lock by wiggling it up and down. Do not use undue force.

A better alternative to the key is a ladies hair pin, bent open, push one end inside the lock and wiggle it up and down, it will go further inside the lock barrel than the key because it will be less than a quarter of the size of the key in terms of it’s width and thickness.

You are unlikely to get immediate success but retry later tonight after the oil has had several hours to penetrate, it will eventually work.
