I've just tried to upgrade from Audio 10 to Audio 30 APS on my
Dad's 2003 ML. As soon as we power it up it displays 'PROD'. It won't even ask for the code and doesn't appear to function.

The unit is an Audio 30 APS (BE4716). I believe that this is the CANBUS version and the ML's are Non-CANBUS.

Does anyone know what coding the dealer may need to do?
Should the unit work at all whilst it displayed PROD.?

Hopefully it's just a coding issue, really hope it's not a dud unit. It powers up, lights up, inserting & ejecting CD's works, although the unit doesn't to anything but display 'PROD.'

Hi,
If you just use the Navigation by itself without the arrows displaying on the dash, then the can-bus function is not needed.
It may be that a wrong code was entered before and that the unit needs to be left standing with the power on. This may take up to 1 hour as each time you enter the wrong code, the waiting time gets bigger.
I had a look in the operators manual, but it does not cover anything with the code you mention. Maybe PROD means WAIT in German
It may be worth asking the car electrician at MB.

The W163 ML doesn't support NAV directions in the cluster, neither does it have steering controls, therefore I don't believe CANBUS is required.

Searching some other fourms indicates that it may be a vehicle coding issue. Apparantly the units need to be coded by a dealer using Star for the type of car. Our unit is a BE4716 from a CLK (it has an A208 part no.) From what I understand it may work fine in any W208 CLK but if used in another car may need to be re-coded.

I might try leaving it powered up for a while. Prod doesn't appear to be wait in German. As you say there isn't anything about this message in the owners manual...

I may be wrong but if anyone has any thoughts or has come across please let me know...

I had an BE4716 installed in a 2000 CLK, When we changed cars, I moved it to an SLK.
I bought another one from Ebay (Germany) and fitted in to my Driving school A-Class.
The latest one i bought was another BE4716 and I fitted that to a TVR Cerbera. Even had to run a speed signal from the boot to the Radio for the last one.
All have worked straight away.
The only one that had to be programmed was in the first CLK and that was only to get the arrows in the dash as it worked anyway.

Thanks, think we may try a Merc specialist with access to Star or our local Merc dealer and see what could be done.

Good news!, We've got it working now!!!

Dad took the car to a local MB specialist (with Star). He's not sure what they did, but £20 and 45 mins later it's working fine. He's really pleased with the result and likes the Audio 30 unit....
