Is there any way to manually close the window, ahead of stripping out the door etc ?

Time is short, and rain threatens !

Did you check the fuse? That's where I'd look first. If memory serves me correctly the windows are fused as opposite pairs on the W124, i.e. front offside with with rear near side and vice-versa. If your near-side rear passenger window has stopped working too then it could be the fuse has blown.

Thanks Steve, good try !

You were right on the fuse arrangements !

This window has been playing up recently, so I guess there is a problem in the door somewhere.

Thinking about it, the window has only failed on a handful of occasions; later on it has been ok, until today.

There is no sound to indicate a mechanical failure; almost as if the switch is failing to make, on occasions.
