I have just noticed that my car when i started it up is "shaking!!" you can actually feel the car shaking and when i open the door, you can clearly hear the car isnt running right, kinda sounds as if you are quickly pressing the accelerator on and off? allthough the rev counter stays at usual place..just like a rough idle really, when you rev it sounds normal..but soon drops back to the rough idle again

actually theres another thing that its been doing for a while, sometimes when you stop the revs kinda hover at 1500, instead of dropping to the usual 1000?

wow im having problems acessing this site atm! anyway heres an update..

i wondered if it was the MAF, so i unplugged the sensor, immediatly it ran like normal... does this definatly mean that its the MAF? If so, would you reccomend cleaning it as per instructions somewhere on here, or, just buying a new one? any idea what sort of cost they are for a 2002 w203 coupe?

Could try cleaning it first if it is very mucky, also worth having a look in there to make sure you are not getting an oily build up.

What engine do you have?

Definately worth a try cleaning it!
RRP from the dealer for yours (part number 2710940248 from what I can see although you would need to check) is £270 a lot dearer than the diesel ones (mine is £53)
It will be a fair bit cheaper from a Bosch indy I expect and it is £243 from the online MB dealer.
Get some electrical contact cleaner and give it a go. Be carefull not to touch the sensor itself though.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

I'm sure there will be someone technical who can answer the question but I ran my Audi with the MAF disconnected for about a week, and about 500 miles after it broke, with the full approval of the Audi main dealer so you should be fine

oo i never noticed i have a yellow engine light on the dash ;p in manual it says possibly emmissions, but i guess its running a dodgy fuel mixture because of the sensor being dodge..

bit of an update, as usual with my luck, my car isnt as easy as the parrots demo of getting to the MAF, its totally different ;p hehe i guess they like to make it hearder for you to do yourselves.

I have spoken to two people, Mertrux, who to be honest were rather rude, want £60 to diag it, and said it sounds like its either the MAF sensor £450!!, or the Throttle Actuator at a staggering £850! beauty! my 1st merc and its been nothing but problems with it 2bh :(

I then spoke to a garage in derby, who only deal with BMW and Mercedes, they seemed really helpful and he said its more than likely the MAF, and a diag would be £25+vat.
He talked me through it on the phone, seemed to be quite aware of the problem i described, cant get me in until tuesday, but said its perfectly fine to drive around for a few days anyway. Once i have been if its any good ill post the contact detail as they claim to specialise in them and at £25+vat for a diag i dont think is too bad???
But 1st ill make sure they are any good :)

Thanks to all for your help so far. This problem meant i missed out on the MB world meet though..which sucks, 2bh! :p

Hi all, got car sorted in the end, it was the MAF. It did cost £270 for the part :p and i ended up paying the same amount going to this indie bmw/merc place as i would of done at mercedes...allthough the service was fine and have no complaints, for the same money, next time id just goto merc dealer.. all in all £370! OWCH!

you have the same car as me :) its kinda obivous to spot but im just going to take a picture for you ~:)

i warn though, this isnt a quick job like on older ones, no jubilee clip and off it comes with ours, its a right pain, took mechanic a good 30mins i was standing watching.. its held on with 4 bolts, one he had to use a mirror tool to even see, im not entirely sure how to get it off now, but i know the air filter box came out, and lots of other leads and stuff ;p

i might say again, according to mercedes if you have same symptons as me sometimes rough idle and engine shaking the number 1 thing to do is check the breather pipe, on the mercedes tech system, not the MAF, if you have a tear in a pipe, it will detect the maf as wrong.
at £270 for the MAF check out the breather pipe! :)
