Help wanted for suspected oil leak and gearbox replacing!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi posted a link earlier really do need help.
We have a vaneo 1.7 cdi ambiente diesel automatic.this car has been into the garage quite alot over the last few months due to creaking noise which then went to a squeaking noise, the brakepads were replaced.we then had smoke coming from underneath the car which was oil splashed underneath.as soon as the car is filled with oil within 24hrs the car shows no oil on the dipstick.the garage cannot find where the oil leak is coming from.
After getting the car back for the garage it seems to struggle getting in and out of gear and shakes violently from side to side.the garage have now said that the gearbox needs replacing and it maybe where the oil leak is??
They have quoted £1500-£2000,we have a friend who can fit a gearbox in if we can find one which after spending the whole day online and the phone isn't easy!!!evetually found one which will be £748 inc vat this is from an aclass.
Would really like some advice and help many thanks fay

Thats what the garage said as it has had a suspected oil leak for a while now but they can't find where its coming from. The car over the last week or so has been shaking violently which when took to the garage they claim that the automatic gear box has gone needing to be changed and until thet take it out they still won't know where this leak is.

Sounds funny to me this dose! are they they saying its an internal leak with gearbox? or is it leaking onto ground?
Have you had it to mb or just a normal garage?
There is problems with these gearbox's but problems are there to be fixed in my view

I have to agree,,I do not know this one very well and was going to look for known faults,,so many times do non MB specialist mess things up as they do not know

I know its a confusing one this, as like i said they have been looking for this oil leak since july!!!Yes it is a MB specialist there was oil on the ground which they replaced some seals but now the oil is still escaping but from where they do not know which is now why they have said its suspected in the gearbox. He basically told us to get rid of the car if we can....which we are not in the position to do so financially. So he said replace the gearbox will be estimated between £1500-£2000!! :(

I've been told only a Aclass yr 2000 or before 1.7 diesel will fit it if we can't get a vaneo gear box.

This is just so wrong, if its an externall leak then i have not got the first clue as to why they cant find the leak?
Also even if its leaking from where ever it is, then cant see why a leak would cause the problems you have, unless there is so little oil in your box to operate correctly,
Sounds to me like they just dont want to get technical and poss looking for the easy way out.
