Hi All

I have found a 300 TD for sale 1991 with 220,000 miles.
It has full service history - the last 4 years at a local garage.
The bodywork is in good condition but the interior is very scruffy. It looks as if it will clean up. The carpet in the load bay is damaged but every thing else seems to be in place. The electric sun roof worked as did all the windows.

The engine started from cold easily and ran very well. Gears changed smoothly and no clonking. I thought the accelerator pedal quite heavy - had no idea if I was flat to the boards or not. something you get used to?

Under the bonnet it was all in place but not in pristine condition. A good steam clean would help.

Underneath there was no rust or corrosion.

It has a full MOT.
The owner says he gets 32 mpg - is this acheivable?

I have looked in Parkers and the price is £1650 for a private deal with the car in good condition.
The asking is a lot more than this!

what would a fair price range be?

your 300TD

Hi
this is probably too late but ....

I have always found Parkers way too low for diesel Merc's , there is so much demand for them and relatively few compared to Petrol and they run for decades so there comes a point where there is no more depreciation for a good car which parkers seems to ignore. I had to pay well over for mine and I was first in a long queue of buyers on the day. Cant tell you what would be fair but looking at other ad's is a better quide. Condition and service history are more important than age or mileage in my view. Try Glass's or one of the other car selling sites with a valuation tool or look at Mercseller.com for ads.

In terms of MPG, I get 33mpg week in week out from a 300D slightly newer model than the one you are looking at with a revised engine M606 but I would guess similar would be about right.

hope this helps

I would regard a 220K Merc worth no more than a 220K Volvo or Saab, £500.00 max. Bills looming are:

worn suspension all round
Heavy tire wear
ECU
Frayed wiring looms
Oil Leaks due to worn seals.

I have owned 200K mile Mercs/Porches/Volvosand saabs and I can say that Saabs fair the worst and Porches fair the best, the Merc outclasses the Volvo, but the volvo electrics beat Mercedes. Ofcourse this is only one mans experience!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Thanks all

No the seats are fabric and there is no AC.

He wants more than your ball park figure.
The engine was reconned 2 years ago - cost £2500.
Tyres are newish.

Well i would get the car looked over by a specialist before you buy, but dont be put off by just the mileage. Im sure the car is a lot cheaper than one thats done 100K, and may still be a lot better.
Dont look at parkers etc, i find it rubbish for any mercs apart from the typical company c-classes...

Many thanks for your help.

For a car worth £2 to £3 k I feel that there is a risk attached in buying one on such a budget. To arrange a "specialist" to look at it would seem over the top. I have driven for many years and have carried out a lot of work on cars. The car I tested last weekend did not appear to have any faults that I could detect.
It felt very sound and solid. Due to the state of the interior and the asking price I may look elsewhere.
