Hi, desperately need some help here.

I've got a W124 coupe, 1994. Didn't think I had an alarm on it but today, went to disconnect the battery to change the worn steering wheel. When I reconnected the battery, the alarm went off and I've not been able to turn it off! The immobiliser comes on too!

I tried reconnecting the battery with the key in the ignition at position 2 and this allows me to start the car but as soon as I turn it off, the immobiliser comes back and alarm is back on and I'm back at square one.

I've tried various other things including reconnecting the battery with all doors closed and bonnet switch closed but to no avail.

I believe it's a scorpion alarm as there are stickers on the windows for this but the car doesn't have a remote, no infra-red receivers. There's also a key hole in the glovebox but I don't have the key for this.

Please help, I don't wanna have to call out the AA and this is my pride and joy!

As far as I know you do need a remote, they are still available

The best (ie simplest & most expedient) thing to do would be to rip out the alarm and replace it with a new one

Do you know if there is any other way to disable it? When I bought the car I got two keys and no remote. There's no infra-red sensors on the car so it never had remote central locking.

The key hole in the glovebox, I’m guessing it is round, it is for switching the alarm off, in the absence of a key you need to find the two wires that go into the back of that key hole and remove or snip them and COVER them with insulation tape. This will turn off the alarm and you should be o.k.again.The ignition key should take care of the immobiliser…I think, is it a flip key with one button and an infer-red light?

You could hook up an ordinary toggle switch to the two wires you remove from the key switch, this will overcome the problem of the missing key and allow you to turn on/off the alarm.

I agree with what Malcolm has said and as your car is the same year as mine it is likely it has a scorpion alarm too, you should have a rectangle key fob with 2 buttons, a slide switch on the side and a red light which lights up when the button is pressed.

Thanks Dec!

I ended up doing just that, but I only snipped one of the lives (there were four wires, two of which were live). That immediately killed the alarm system and immobiliser so left it at that. Panic over.

I didn't get any rectangle key fobs when I bought the car so couldn't disable it, can't believe the battery hasn't been disconnected for so long! I've just got real basic keys.

I can go back to enjoying this great car now! Maybe we should hide these posts as they would be quite useful for some unsavouries.
