HELP with bleeding brake system 190E 1993 (without ASR) I went to bleed the brake system, and found myself in the middle of something which has caused many hours of frustration.. From the rear brakes, only the brake fluid which was in the pistons came out, after that not one drop, in spite of using both the brake pedal and the vacuum pump methods. The level of brake fluid in the reservoir does not decrease, nor are there leaks in the system.. (The front brakes bleed well.) Does anyone have an idea as to what is the problem?/

you have what is know as a tandem master cylinder, one part for front and the other for rear, the chances are that the back seal has gone and you will need to replace the master cylinder. to be sure check the other back wheel.

I add to this thread that I presume that you had a spongy brake pedal or you had to pump the pedel, and that is why you were bleeding them, that is also the symptons of a faulty master cylinder.

Does this model have a pressure limiting valve on the rear brakes? If there is then this will be actuated by the position of the axle. On full compression the valve will be fully open and on full droop it will be closed. As you probably have the wheels off and the vehicle in the air the valve will be closed hence no fluid transfer. Locate the PLV and clamp it to simulate full suspension compression and the system will bleed.

If you don't have a PLV then there must be a fault perculiar to this model.

There is nothing special on a 190E I am refering to a 2.3. Bleeding should start with offside back, nearside back, offside front then nearside front.the master cycinder is a tandem.

the answer

Thanks to all who tried to respond to my problem. Because of the cold weather it has taken awhile to resolve this. The problem (after dismounting the entire system) was that the brake fluid reservoir- the rear compartment had become blocked by deposits and therefore was empty, hard imagine as the culprit!

I have used the easybleed system for years with success. On this occasion it might have power forced the dirt out.
