I just bought a 2002 AMG S55 with a telephone in it (two actually, one in the front and one in the rear). I figured to add a pay-as-you-go sim card and bingo, start making calls. It did not quite work out like that. Absolutely nothing happened would not recognize the sim card etc. What am I missing here. Any help gratefully received.

Thanks Malcolm, I presume I just disconnect the handset and take it (them) to a mobile shop and get them to convert it?

Of course as I bought the car used (2002 AMG S55) I can only assume they were in the car from new. The MB Telephone Owners Manual covers the Nokia phones that are there, so they must have been originally installed. On the back of the phone it says Nokia Q02. I have a Virgin PAYG sim card that I haven't been able to get working. Appreciate your help Malcolm.

Thanks for posting back,, we can forget the phone coding then as they were working, and this could just be a sim issue.

I will have a look on the data base to night

Sounds like the phone(s) could be locked to a network other than the SIM network?

I think so too. What say you Malcolm?

As the car recognizes the phone, then it must be a SIM issue, easy to borrow another sim from a friend for a different network

The two phones in the car are Nokia 6090 units. I put in the card from my mobile, a virgin payg card. The system recognizes the address book from the card but comes up with 'no network available' when I dial a number.

Last week I took it into the MB dealer for a diagnostic check for the telephone, the TV and the Tire pressure system. They came up with absolutely nothing on any of the three problems. Unless someone can point me in some sort of direction I guess I will just keep plugging away trying to figure them all out.

Well guys you zeroed in on that one, specially djb who hit the bulls eye. The MB dealer was completely baffled and suggested more investigation. I ordered free payg sims from O2 and Vodaphone, as suggested by djb. The O2 came first, this am, and in it went and bingo, recognized the network immediately. After a £10 top up I called the house (from the garage) and ordered a celebratory cup of coffee. Thanks a lot guys.
