Which wheels

Hi tom7035

All my references indicate that the E280 is fitted with 16 inch wheels. However, they come with a range of widths, in which case you have another variable to consider - offset.

What wheels are fitted to your 200E? Sixteen inch? I assume both vehicles are 5-hole fixing with identical PCDs (pitch circle diameters)?

If the wheels of the E280 you have in mind are wider than your own then the offset could be a significant factor. If you don't know what 'offset' is, look at the following website under 'Wheel Information'.

http://www.chris-longhurst.com/carbibles/index.html?menu.html&tyre_bible.html

Doubtless other members will reply with a 'yes' or 'no' recommendation but please be aware that fitting wider tyres will have other effects of handling, not just upon grip.

Are you after the E280s wheels because of their looks or is width a factor?

REGARDS Phil

Hi JFB, Quite likely, only ones up at the moment! However, I will quietly withdraw my interest, neither I nor the seller seems to know too much about them.

Good luck! Tom.

Thanks Philharve. I've just the steel wheels unfortunately and it's just to finish off the look. Also I'm a penniless peasant so can't go for anything fancy!

Tom,

The ones that were fitted to the sportline version of your car were 15" 7J. The ofFset for these was ET 41.
For non sportline 15" 6.5 J offset ET 48.
The 500E had 16" 8J offset ET 34

W124 up to mid 93:
  • Standard Alloys: 15" 6.5J H2 ET 48.....Tyres: 195/65 ZR 15
  • Sportline Alloys: 15" 7J H2 ET 41.........Tyres: 205/60 ZR 15
  • 500E Alloys.....: 16" 8J H2 ET 34........Tyres: 225/55 ZR 16
If the J no. matches the ET no. as above, they will be fine, so his 7J will need to have an offset of 41 so the extra half inch goes out instead of in. IE the centre of the wheel is moved out from the standard ones.

Hi Pascal. Thanks for that. I had an idea about the offset figures, but the wheels advertised seem suspiciously like the wrong ones to have been fitted to the sellers car in the first place. Also he seems to know so very little about them himself. Dodgy. About to end too (eBay sale) with no bidders at £49 set of four! Great pity.
Cheers, Tom.

When he says he

this usually means that they are the wrong size.
Don't worry, a nice set will come along.

Just a general note for people considering wheels for the W124 - disregard the wheel width and offset figures above for the 500E. The 500E wheel numbers above are correct but meaningless for anyone considering wheels for a W124 which is not a 500E / E500.

The W124 500E / E500 has a completely different suspension set-up and fenders from all other W124 models. The W124 500e carries the r129 SL 500 suspension, front and rear. The 500e has a wider track and extremely flared front and rear fenders. Hence it can accomodate the 8J et34 wheels. No other w124 can accomodate these wheels without modifcation to bodywork.

The 500E can infact accomodate 9" wheels et25 in the front and 10" et25 wheels in the rear....without ANY modification required to bodywork. It's a completely different beast.

With standard W124's, you can run with 7" and et35, no problem.

BTW, not all 500E's came with the 8-hole 8J x 16 et34 wheels as standard from the factory. The w124 E500 Limited's (built in the last year of w124 500E production, 1994) and E60 AMG's (which were AMG tuned E500 Limited's) were fitted with 8.25J x 17 Evo II wheels as standard fitment from the factory. The ultimate W124's.
