I’m new to the club and everyone is referring to W something when describing the model of there car. I have a C220 sport 2009 59plate so any ideas what my W is?

So, you have a W204 assuming it is a Saloon Car. S204 if you have an Estate Car And welcome to the forum

Because your car is German the W refers to the first letter of the word vehicle in German.....Wehicle .
If it’s not that then Blobcat is probably right

So then does R stand for roadster? As in R231, but these are also convertibles, or coupes?

Yes R is roadster.
R129 is the 1989-2001 SL
R170 is the early SLK
R171 is the next SLK
R172 is the last SLK
R230 is the last but one SL
R231 is the current SL.

These are all convertibles.
There are no R Coupes.
