Off to look at a 2003 270CDi tomorrow. Looks nice in pics - black paint, black leather, luxury package.
Seller says "it's hard to start - needs a new battery" which obviously isn't too much of a problem... *if* that is the problem. They also say "all warning lights on dash." Is there anything else which could be the cause? My thoughts are turning to starter motor and alternator.
I'm told it has been serviced, but no details of what that entailed.
It's done 220000km so not especially high mileage.
Anything specific to look for?

If it was easy they would have fixed it prior to sale , sounds like it’s a non runner parts car at the moment

Hard to start on a diesel, all lights on dash - doesn't sound good to me. Immediately I start to think about problems - glow plugs, low compression, injectors and more.

If you're having a look and have another car take some jump leads - don't start it until you given it a few minutes connected up in parallel with the other car.
If the car doesn't start first time and the lights go out - walk away, as said above if it was just a battery then the seller would have fixed it.

To be honest, the cars are very sensitive to battery voltage, so could just be a flat battery causing lights, but may well be something else.
Get it started, check charging at battery with a meter, looking for about 14 odd volts on idle.
run it for a while and see what lights are left, then make your mind up.
Try and take the engine cover off and look for black crap round the injectors

Move on and find another without faults unless its dirt cheap.
Could be a money pit if you are unlucky.

Turns out the DAS module is faulty. Needs replacement and reprogramming. Any idea how much that costs?

RARELY slow start is battery fault in these... unexplained warning lights, clear symtoms - as said - RUN

Story not related; I was seeking a new car few years ago. Went seeing a W209 270CDI. Did a test drive, after inspection I said to seller diesel hp pump is leaking on serpentine belt. Seller gave a blank look and didn't answer, just gave 'so what' expression. I walked away. I think someone got 'almost as a new' car... :(
