please can any1 tell me how to tell if I need a new fuel pump on a 1987 190e I think this mechanic is trying to rip me off he has not said anything about the relay box

This is a hard one, fuel pumps do not last forever, and its the same for the relay. if there is 12 getting through to the pump and it is not running,then the relay is OK, if there is no 12v going to the pump,then it is the relay.

Pumps can often be restored by putting deisel in the pump part and running backwards.
