My E320CDI on a 54 plate has just turned into a Circus Car! The yellow Engine light came on but I had to get home. White Smoke pouring out the exhaust pipes turning to grey at the end of low revs 10 mile drive home. Rattling, metallic noise and whistling. Please tell me its the turbo and what do I do and who to go to. Thanks in advance.

certainly sounds like the turbo but it shouldn't have blown on a 54 plate. If mine went I'd be seriously dischuffed and would be taking it up with MB for a MAJOR contribution.
What's the mileage and has it been properly serviced?

As JBerks if the turbo has blown, it could allow oil to get into the air intake, and foul the O2 sensor that turns the lamp on, there is nothing else that it could be, that I know of

It has done 118,000 and had MB Dealer Stamps on the Service History apart from the last one which was Evans Halshaw. Everything else is A1***** with the car. My local MB Dealers just talk ££££££££££££££'s everytime you contact them. The Car Dealer I got it from is saying I have had it over six months and its left to me to repair. However, it is a really great car and a looker so I will battle on for now and it looks around £1000-1500 Bill!

Thanks, Television. I will retain the 'blown' one and see what MB say but as I have found on visits to them, Cash is King! I will let you all know how I get on.
Are there any Turbos, I should avoid the Garage getting as a replacement or is it only to come from MB Dealers?????

When mine went, the oil got into everything & MB replaced the turbo, intercooler, pre cat & all the air inlet pipework. Even then I had to return it to them a couple of times as it was still smoking from the exhaust & they dismantled everything & cleaned out the "residual oil" which they said was causing the smoke.

As it has no dipstick, I used the onboard computer to monitor the oil level & found it was using oil at an alarming rate and returned it again, this time the valve stem oil seals were replaced and it no longer smokes or burns oil.

Most disappointing aspect of the whole episode apart from the turbo going prematurely, is the way they kept insisting that smoke from the exhaust & burning oil was normal even although it never did this before the turbo went.

I've had a few turbo charged cars over the years, and it used to be said that 70,000 miles was as long as they could be expected to last. With todays fully synthetic oils, they should last longer although bad driving habits or manufacturing faults will always end their life early. At 118,000 miles, it sounds as though it's had a good innings.

Ive just got rid of my E reg vw golf 1.6 gtd with 225,000 miles and all original under bonnet (bar service parts and glow plugs). injectors were never touched, turbo was fine, thrust bearing whined a bit on cold and I even ran the car on pure veg oil for 5000 miles. it has a garret turbo. Scary to hear some turbos have had a "good innings" at 70k

what about when one is doing 80mph for a long period of time then pulls into a service station, very hot turbo to zero in seconds? now would that scenario be a turbo killer ?

Sure would, especially if mineral oil is used as it turns to carbon due to the extreme heat & blocks the oil passage to the bearing, modern synthetics are better at handling these temperatures but the turbo should be allowed to spool down & cool before the engine is switched off or the bearings have had it.

Interesting info on this :D

It was not that long ago that handbooks said that after a high speed run, the last few miles of the journey should be done in a light manner to allow the engine to cool slowly.

I still do this today , though not so necessary as I have slowed down in general

Dear All.

Got the Car repaired to the tune of £1430; it turned out that the Dealer I bought it off had not done the Service as he stated as the oil was like 'pudding' when the Garage dropped the Sump! The Dealer is also going out of Business, so I have had to foot the Bill. It turned out to be a Garett Turbo and looked like a Nuclear Reactor on the side of the engine. Goes like a Bat out of Hell and all Codes reset etc. Only troble now is that I have two red light in left and right segment of the Parking Assistance System. BLAST!

How did you pay for the 'service' that wasn't done correctly. If it was with a credit card you may have recourse to the credit card company.

It was done as part of the 'deal' when I bought the car from the non-MB Dealer. I left picking the car up for a week for this all to be done i.e. Service, two new tyres and valet  My Mechanic checked the brakes as I have this done with all my cars and they were brand new:D So, obviously wrongly in this case, I assumed everything has been done:mad:!

I have resisted throwing the 'old' turbo unit at the Dealer who now appears to be winding-up his business due to the Credit Crunch:D!

Was any part of the 'deal' paid for with a credit card e.g. deposit, because if it was then you're still covered.
